Champagne is a sparkling wine originated and produced in the Champagne wine region of France under the rules of the appellation, which demand specific vineyard practices, sourcing of grapes exclusively from designated places within it, specific grape-pressing methods and secondary fermentation of the wine in the bottle to cause carbonation.

About Liia Konovalova
Liia Konovalova is a WSET Level 2 certified sommelier and wine program director at Cuvee 30A. Originally from Russia, she moved to the U.S. seven years ago and discovered her true passion in wine and viniculture while working at Tim Creehan’s flagship fine dining venue. WSET Level 2 certification includes knowledge of how environmental factors, grape-growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from several grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio/Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah/Shiraz.

About French Champagnes
The only wines that are legally allowed to be named “Champagne” must be bottled within 100 miles of the Champagne region in France. The name is legally protected by European law and an 1891 treaty that requires true champagne to be produced in the Champagne region.
In France, the first sparkling champagne was created accidentally; the pressure in the bottle led it to be called “the devil’s wine” (le vin du diable), as bottles exploded or corks popped. At the time, bubbles were considered a fault.
The grapes Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay are used to produce almost all Champagne, but small amounts of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris (called Fromenteau in Champagne), Arbane, and Petit Meslier are vinified as well.
Champagne became associated with royalty in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The leading manufacturers made efforts to associate their Champagnes with nobility and royalty through advertising and packaging, which led to its popularity among the emerging middle class.
There are more than one hundred champagne houses and 19,000 smaller vignerons (vine-growing producers) in Champagne. These companies manage some 32,000 hectares of vineyards in the region. The type of champagne producer can be identified from the abbreviations followed by the official number on the bottle.
Learn more about Champagnes at our certified sommelier’s presentation during the event.
